Siteri Namere Nanovo’s remarkable achievement as the dux of Saint Thomas High School in Lautoka this week serves as an inspiring tale of perseverance and dedication. While many of her classmates enjoyed the support of stable family environments, Ms. Nanovo has faced significant challenges since her primary school days. Between managing household chores and preparing meals, she has balanced her studies with her responsibilities at home.
At just 18 years old, Siteri and her five siblings are being raised by their father, Ratu Sela Vunakasi Nanovo, who has taken on the dual role of both parent since their mother left when Siteri was young. Siteri expressed her gratitude, dedicating her dux trophy to her father, acknowledging his selfless sacrifices to ensure that they receive a good education.
“This trophy is for my Ratu,” she stated. “He has selflessly looked after us because he knows good education will get us a good future.” Her determination to achieve academic success stems from her desire to provide a better life for her family, citing her father’s hard work in the construction industry as a source of motivation.
The family, residing in Natabua, lives within walking distance of the school, which has made education more accessible, albeit with its own set of challenges. Siteri, who hails from Tavuki, Kadavu, and has maternal ties to Bua in Vanua Levu, emphasizes the collective efforts of her family. The four sisters in the household assist one another with chores and support the younger siblings in their studies, demonstrating a strong sense of teamwork and resilience.
“While we face hardships together, my father’s unwavering encouragement pushes us to endure through tough times,” Siteri mentioned. She attributes her ability to manage her responsibilities and studies to divine strength and support.
Looking ahead, Siteri plans to pursue a law degree at the University of Fiji next year, embodying hope and ambition for herself and her family. Her journey highlights not only the challenges she faced but also the immense strength found in family bonds and the power of education to transform lives.
