From Hardship to Glory: Vika Nakacia’s Rugby Dream Takes Flight

Vika Nakacia has overcome significant challenges in her quest to build a career in rugby. Her determination paid off when she was selected to join the Fiji women’s sevens team for the upcoming tournament in Dubai.

Starting her rugby journey in 2020 with rugby league, Nakacia transitioned to sevens rugby just two years later. She plays for Ezers, a club established last year, having previously represented the Namoli Wests Tigers, where her team reached the semi-finals.

Despite facing skepticism about women’s participation in rugby and financial difficulties in acquiring proper gear, Nakacia uses criticism as fuel to enhance her skills. She recalls times when she struggled to afford bus fare for training, often walking from Kashmir to Nadovu Park.

Her journey wasn’t always met with support, as her parents initially disapproved of her choice to pursue rugby. Nakacia began her rugby career while in Year 13 at Ba Provincial Free Bird Institute in Lautoka, although she later left school before completing her education. With her recent success, she is now motivated to finish her high school education and continue her studies in accounting.

In an encouraging message to young girls, Nakacia emphasizes the importance of self-belief and pursuing one’s passions, stating, “With God’s plan, nothing is impossible.” She also expressed admiration for Fiji men’s sevens player Jerry Tuwai, recalling how his advice to trust the process and persist in striving for her goals greatly impacted her.
