Inspiring stories of resilience and triumph are not uncommon in Fiji, and one such powerful narrative comes from Esther Lusiana Kuva, the head girl and dux recipient of Nakasi High School. At just 18 years old, Esther has turned her personal struggles into a source of motivation, dedicating her academic achievements to the memory of her late mother, who passed away from bone cancer last year.
During the awards ceremony, Esther was overwhelmed with emotion as her name was called for the prestigious dux award, reflecting the challenges she faced alongside her three siblings after their mother’s death. “It was quite hard for us, but I feel honored to have received these accolades,” she shared.
Esther expressed her gratitude towards family and friends who supported her through difficult times, particularly her aunt, uncle, and grandmother, who rallied around the siblings after their loss. “Even though my mother isn’t physically here, I feel her presence with me spiritually,” she added.
Her academic success included multiple awards, such as the Year 13 prize, a leadership award, and subject accolades in English, Pure Mathematics, Biology, and Physics. Esther’s grandmother, Ana Qitialewa, praised her granddaughter’s dedication, noting her commitment to traveling from Verata, Tailevu for school each day at 5:30 a.m., and managing her studies with discipline and responsibility.
As the family prepares to move to a new home in Koronivia, Esther is considering a future in the medical field. She is weighing her options between nursing and dental care. Her journey serves as a reminder that hard work, sacrifice, and faith can lead to remarkable achievements, and she advises others to prioritize their dedication, stating, “In everything you do, put God first, and He will do the rest.”
Esther Kuva’s story exemplifies the strength of the human spirit in overcoming adversity, and it stands as an inspiration for many young people to persevere through their challenges.
In summary, Esther’s achievements, marked by her strong work ethic and enduring spirit, reflect not only her mother’s influence but also the collective support of her family, showing that even after loss, hope and success can flourish.
