Inspiring stories of personal triumph often emerge from adversity, and the recent achievement of Esther Lusiana Kuva, head girl and dux recipient of Nakasi High School, serves as a poignant example. At just 18 years old and hailing from Korovisilou Village in Serua, Kuva dedicated her academic success to her late mother, who passed away from bone cancer before Kuva undertook her Year 12 Fiji School Leaving Certificate exams.
Overcome with emotion as her name was called, Kuva reflected on the challenge of managing her studies and responsibilities after her mother’s death. “It was hard trying to juggle my school, my role in the school and all; at this point, I’m even shocked to be scooping all these awards,” she said, acknowledging the support of her family during this difficult period. Her aunt and uncle provided refuge, while her grandmother played a crucial role in their lives.
Despite the absence of her mother, Kuva expressed that she felt her presence in spirit, underscoring a deep emotional connection that continues to motivate her. Her accomplishments during the ceremony included various awards: the Year 13 prize, a leadership award, multiple subject awards in English, Pure Mathematics, Biology, and Physics, the title of Best Science Student, the Principal Award, and of course, the Dux award for 2024.
Kuva’s family, including her grandmother, 71-year-old Ana Qitialewa, were visibly proud, celebrating her incredible dedication and discipline demonstrated by her daily routine of waking up at 5:30 AM for school and returning home to study before bed. Ms. Qitialewa shared, “I know her mom would be so proud of her right now and what she has achieved.”
Looking forward, Esther plans to channel her passion into the medical field, contemplating studies in either nursing or dental care, while her family prepares to settle into a new home in Koronivia.
In her closing remarks, Kuva emphasized the importance of sacrifice, dedication, and a strong spiritual foundation. “Put God first and He will do the rest,” she advised, a hopeful message that resonates well beyond her academic success.
