Every now and then, we come across uplifting stories of individuals who have emerged victorious after facing significant challenges. Many times, what might be perceived as a “dark chapter” in someone’s life becomes a transformative journey that fuels their eventual success.
Such a poignant story comes from Esther Lusiana Kuva, the head girl and top student (dux) of Nakasi High School, who recently dedicated her achievements to her late mother. At just 18 years old, Esther from Korovisilou Village in Serua expressed deep emotions as her name was announced during the school’s award ceremony.
“I lost my mother to bone cancer last year, just before I took my Year 12 Fiji School Leaving Certificate examination. It was quite difficult for my siblings and me,” Esther shared through tears. She reflected on the balancing act of managing her academic responsibilities while navigating emotional hardships, admitting that she was taken aback by her success.
Despite the numerous hurdles she faced, Esther expressed gratitude for those who supported her throughout her journey. “I thank my family, especially my aunt and uncle who welcomed us during our tough times, and my grandmother, who has been a constant source of support,” she said. She also conveyed a heartfelt sentiment, stating, “Even though my mother isn’t physically present, I feel her spirit with me.”
Esther’s dedication paid off as she received multiple accolades, including the Year 13 prize, a Leadership award, a Year 13 distinction award, and awards for English, Pure Mathematics, Biology, and Physics, along with being named the Best Science Student and receiving the prestigious Principal Award. The pride of her family was evident, especially her 71-year-old grandmother, Ana Qitialewa, who highlighted Esther’s discipline and commitment, noting her daily journey from Verata, Tailevu, to school and her disciplined routine.
As they prepare to move to a new home in Koronivia, Esther has set her sights on the medical field, contemplating a future in either nursing or dental care. She offered wise words to others: “Sacrifice and dedication are key, and in everything you do, put God first, and He will guide you.”
This inspiring story not only highlights Esther’s resilience and determination but also serves as a reminder of the strength found in community and family support during challenging times. It is a testament to the notion that even in the face of grief, achievement is possible with hard work and perseverance.
Esther’s journey can inspire many young individuals facing their struggles, demonstrating that challenges can lead to remarkable success when approached with dedication and belief.
