Penaia Latianara, a former soccer player who represented the Navua, Nasinu, Rewa, and Suva teams, reflects on his rich journey in football, marked by passion and community pride. Latianara began his career in soccer at a young age, joining the senior team of Navua while still in year 11. He recalls playing alongside outstanding athletes such as the late Romulo Kaibau and Saimoni Ratu, which fueled his enthusiasm for the game.

Latianara’s most cherished moment was being part of the team that won the first Fiji FACT championship in 2003, a victory that left an indelible mark on the Navua community. He reminisces about the sacrifices he and his teammates made during their playing days, emphasizing that they played not for financial gain, but for the love of the sport and pride in their district.

“I used to hitchhike after training to get home, but those challenges shaped my love for the game,” he said, illustrating the dedication and community spirit prominent among players of his time. He later spent a decade with Rewa, under the mentorship of notable coaches including Marika Rodu.

Currently, Latianara also serves as the president of the Serua Rugby Union, illustrating his commitment to sports and community involvement. His reflections resonate with other former players who share a similar dedication to nurturing new talent and fortifying their local sports cultures.

As the 2025 Fiji FACT tournament approaches, Latianara has expressed optimism for the current Navua team, echoing sentiments from fellow former players who are rallying support. “The Tui Namosi is behind the team as well as we, the former Navua soccer players. We have faith in their ability to reclaim the cup,” he stated. This hopeful outlook among past and present players showcases the enduring connection football fosters in communities.

Latianara’s story highlights the importance of mentorship and community in sports. His journey inspires the next generation of athletes to pursue their aspirations while reinforcing the value of unity and pride in local heritage. As players gear up for the tournament, there is a palpable sense of excitement and camaraderie that surrounds Fijian football, promising a vibrant showcase of talent and dedication.
