Rohit Ritesh Chand, 42, from Navua, credits his father’s passion for football as the catalyst for his own love of the sport. Inspired by his father’s local team, Chand’s journey in football began in Year nine at Rampur College. By Year 12, he had already joined the Navua youth team, eventually making his senior debut for Navua in 2002. Just a year later, he helped lead the team to win their first Fiji FACT title.
Reflecting on his career, Chand recalls, “We won it with our home players. That was special.” His career progressed as he joined the Fiji Police Force in 2004, which caused him to take a brief hiatus from football. However, he returned to the field in 2005, playing for the Suva district team from 2008 to 2010, including participation in notable tournaments such as the Battle of the Giants.
“I experienced my first BOG with Suva in 2008. We reached the final, and the crowd was electric,” he said, emphasizing the intense atmosphere and pride that accompanied the tournament. Known for his versatility, Chand played multiple positions on the field, adapting to his team’s needs.
Chand aspired to play at a national level but found it challenging to juggle his full-time job with the demands of professional football. “I tried, but with work and travelling between Navua and Suva, I couldn’t make it,” he explained. Now residing in Suva, he continues to avidly follow football, especially during the BOG tournament, which he believes remains a premier event with high levels of competition and strong community support.
Chand imparts an important message to the next generation: “Stay away from drugs. Listen to your parents. Focus on the game. If you want to succeed, you need discipline.” His journey reflects the impact of familial inspiration, commitment to the sport, and the importance of mentorship in nurturing future talents.
As the Battle of the Giants tournament approaches, the excitement surrounding Fijian football is palpable. This community-driven support creates an environment of hope and anticipation, indicative of a vibrant future for the sport. With experienced players like Chand sharing their stories, there is a strong foundation laid for aspiring young athletes in Fiji.
