Seven years ago, Francis Lee took on the role of general manager at Shangri-La Fijian Resort and Spa, aiming to restore the property to its former glory as one of the premier resorts in Fiji. With deep experience as a hotelier, having worked in over 30 Shangri-La locations worldwide, Lee was determined to enhance the resort, despite facing stiff competition from other brands.

Upon his arrival, Lee understood that the resort required some renovation and restructuring to meet modern standards. He previously managed the Hylandia by Shangri-La Hotel in Yunnan, China, and his international career included stints in multiple countries, such as Australia, the Bahamas, and Japan. His decision to come to Fiji has since been described as the happiest he has ever made.

Doing some research before moving, Lee discovered that the people of Fiji ranked among the happiest in the world, which motivated him to seek a joyful environment for himself. One of his first major initiatives upon arriving was to introduce a water park to the resort—an endeavor that has significantly attracted both local and international guests. The installation of this water park cost around $150,000 and was met with enthusiastic support from the owners.

In a unique approach, Lee decided not to charge guests for using the water park, a contrast to the fees typically found in other countries, where admission can reach up to $50 for an hour. He believed that providing free access would enhance the experience, making the resort more appealing. This strategy proved successful, as families return repeatedly, driven by their children’s enjoyment of the water park.

Lee emphasizes that the initiative is not solely profit-driven; he is committed to supporting the local community by hiring locals and creating an enjoyable atmosphere for guests. His efforts have resulted in a harmonious synergy between visitor satisfaction and community welfare, fostering an environment where everyone can find joy.
