Bimal Sudhakar’s journey from a garment factory worker to the general manager of risk legal and asset management at the Fiji Development Bank highlights his determination and hard work.
Coming from a modest background, Sudhakar had to abandon his aspiration of becoming a nurse to build a better future for himself and his family. After completing his secondary education, he pursued a steady income and took a job in a garment factory, which was his only source of income at the time.
Reflecting on his early experiences, Sudhakar recalled earning $40 weekly, which was barely enough to support his household. “Back then, that amount was sufficient to fill the cupboard, but I had to work hard to achieve my planned dream,” he said. He contributed half of his earnings to his parents while managing his personal expenses with the rest.
In search of better job opportunities, Sudhakar took on various roles, including working as a sales executive, all in pursuit of a stable income. His perseverance paid off when he received an offer to become a teller at ANZ Bank, despite not having formal qualifications. He faced his fears by taking an aptitude test alongside university graduates.
“That did not stop me from aiming for the teller position. Getting accepted marked a turning point in my pursuit of success,” he explained. While employed as a bank teller, Sudhakar nurtured his passion for understanding the banking system, spending late nights at work to broaden his knowledge and hone his skills.
His commitment impressed senior executives, leading to promotions in senior management positions at ANZ Bank. With more than 20 years of banking experience, he expresses no regret about the choices he made amid life’s challenges. “I’m proud I remained resilient despite coming from an average household. The desire for a better life always motivated me,” he shared.
Now, as the general manager of risk legal and asset management at the Fiji Development Bank, Sudhakar acknowledges that the trials he faced and the risks he took have been crucial in unlocking his potential to lead effectively.
