Eswa Nadan, affectionately known as “Ninja,” has made a significant impact on Fijian football over the years, starting in the sport at a young age and evolving into a celebrated player and coach. Recently, he was honored by the Fiji Football Association as part of their Legends Programme during a ceremony in Nadi on December 1, highlighting his contributions to the game.
At 58 years old, Nadan, who currently resides in Sydney, Australia, operates a successful air-conditioning and refrigeration business but remains deeply engaged with football. His journey in this beloved sport began in 1977 while playing for Nadi Sangam Primary School, where he scored the winning goal in an inter-primary competition, igniting his passion for football.
Transitioning to high school, Nadan initially focused on academics, but soon returned to football, playing for the Navo sports club in the Nadi Local League. This team’s remarkable success led them to the senior division and ultimately the premier division, where Nadan made his mark by scoring crucial goals.
His career advanced significantly when he was invited by the late Nadi Team Manager, Mohammed Saleem, to train with the district team. Nadan made his competitive debut for Nadi in 1987, scoring in a victorious match against Suva. He enjoyed memorable triumphs, including a match that ended Lautoka’s impressive unbeaten streak, a highlight during the Sugar Festival in Lautoka.
Nadan’s talent on the field allowed him to build a legacy, scoring consistently and forming a formidable partnership with fellow striker Rusiate Waqan. Despite facing challenges, including a serious ankle injury that curtailed his playing career by 1994, he transitioned into coaching, leading youth teams and eventually returning to Australia to continue fostering football development.

With his wife Shalini and their two children, he finds inspiration and strength from his family.
