Ratu Baleidreima, a 53-year-old resident of Nadi, is determined to construct a more resilient home that can withstand future flooding. Recently, he, along with his wife and five children, had to evacuate their residence as floodwaters inundated their home. They are currently staying at Andrews Primary School, designated as an evacuation center.
In 2019, Baleidreima purchased land in Nawaijikuma Settlement, an area known for its vulnerability to floods, and erected a temporary structure for his family. As a seasoned security guard originally from Nasaumatua, Lovoni, Ovalau, he has experienced multiple evacuations during flood events.
“My only wish is to build a house elevated on posts for my family,” he expressed. Although he has plans in place, financial constraints have hindered him from realizing this dream, especially as he prioritizes his children’s education. His eldest child attends Nadi Special School, while his second child is set to begin high school next year, with three younger children in primary school.
Describing their recent experience, Mr. Baleidreima recalled how, on Christmas Day, they were preparing to enjoy their lunch when floodwaters breached their home. He promptly informed the police, gathered their important belongings, and within moments, they were evacuated to safety.
Now, his focus lies in waiting for the water levels to recede so he can return to his home and begin the cleanup process.
Summary: Ratu Baleidreima and his family recently faced evacuation due to flooding in Nadi. Despite financial challenges, he remains hopeful of building a more secure elevated home for his family in the future while prioritizing their education.
This situation highlights the resilience of individuals facing natural disasters and the importance of community support during such challenging times. As Baleidreima prepares to rebuild, his story serves as a reminder of the strength found within families and communities.
