I am excited to share my journey as a Fijian JDS scholar currently pursuing a Master of Science in International Cooperation Policy at Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University (APU).
My professional background includes serving as the Risk and Audit Manager at Fiji’s National Fire Authority, where I sought to enhance understanding in governance, development, and public policy. This role inspired me to further my education in these critical areas.
I began this transformative journey in August 2025 with an intensive Japanese language program, a crucial step in adapting to the local culture after relocating to Beppu, Oita—a community where English is not widely spoken. This language training has been invaluable in facilitating my integration into a new environment.
Attending APU, where nearly half the student body comprises international students, has offered me rich opportunities to engage with a plethora of perspectives, collaborating with peers from diverse cultural and professional backgrounds. This interaction has been instrumental in broadening my understanding of global issues.
My academic pursuits in policy analysis, project evaluation, and international cooperation are directly aligned with my aspirations to contribute to Fiji’s future. These studies have significantly enhanced my understanding of institutional effectiveness and public accountability—skills that are crucial for meaningful contributions to my home country’s development.
I am particularly grateful for the unwavering support provided by the JDS team. Their guidance has played a vital role in overcoming challenges related to relocation, cultural adjustment, and university assimilation.
As I approach the end of my first semester, I want to express my deep appreciation for this opportunity. The JDS program has not only broadened my worldview but also equipped me with the necessary tools to make a significant impact on Fiji’s development when I return. This journey not only enriches my professional capabilities but also fosters hope for a brighter future for my country.
