Sokovoli Odrovakavula, affectionately known as Soko, described his experience studying in Indonesia through an academic scholarship as life-changing. The opportunity allowed him to immerse himself in the rich culture and dynamic atmosphere of Indonesia, significantly reshaping his views on education, tradition, and regional cooperation.

Now serving as an instructor at Fiji National University and president of the Indonesian Scholarships Fiji Alumni, Soko is committed to encouraging more Fijian students to explore similar opportunities abroad. During an information session hosted by the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in Suva, he shared insights on how his time studying in one of Asia’s most vibrant nations influenced his academic journey.

Soko emphasizes the abundant diversity, discipline, and innovation found in Indonesia, qualities he believes resonate with Pacific Island students. He urged potential applicants to take on the challenge of studying in a new cultural environment, stating, “Indonesia is not just a place to study; it is a place to grow.”

Reflecting on his time in Indonesia, Soko highlighted the lifelong friendships he formed, the language skills he developed, and the broader regional perspective he gained. While admitting that adjusting to a different education system was challenging, he noted that these experiences only bolstered his resilience and independence.

Today, Soko focuses on mentoring students and enhancing connections among alumni. Under his leadership, the Indonesian Scholarships Fiji Alumni seeks to facilitate cultural exchange and support new applicants as they navigate the scholarship process. He believes that graduates equipped with knowledge of Asia’s economic and technological landscape will greatly benefit Fiji’s development.

“Our region is interconnected,” Soko said, stressing that the relationships and knowledge gained overseas can directly contribute to Fiji’s progress. He recognizes the difficulties of moving to a foreign country but underscores that such challenges are essential for personal growth, fostering independence and self-reliance among the youth. “Step beyond your comfort zone and return to Fiji ready to serve,” he encouraged, inspiring a new generation to embrace educational opportunities.
