From Fields to Fame: Varun Vimlesh Lal’s Inspiring Powerlifting Journey

Fiji-born Australian powerlifter Varun Vimlesh Lal’s journey exemplifies not just the art of lifting weights, but the profound strength of ambition and the pursuit of dreams. Recently, Lal secured third place in the 125kg category at the World Powerlifting Championships held in the United States on November 15, with competitors from Egypt and the USA taking home the gold and silver medals, respectively.

Currently residing in Park Ridge, Brisbane, Lal reflects on his inspiring transition from his modest beginnings in Ba, Fiji, to becoming an international figure in powerlifting. Raised in a farming community where his parents tirelessly cultivated sugarcane, he learned the values of hard work and perseverance from his father, who often toiled for long hours under the sun to provide a better life for his family.

Chasing his aspirations of a brighter future, Lal moved to Australia to pursue a degree in Civil Engineering. He credits the unwavering support of his brother Rajneel and sister-in-law Vennita for helping him adjust to life in a new country. Lal’s journey evolved significantly when he joined a powerlifting team a year ago, and in just nine months, he had the honor of representing Australia at an international competition.

“My goal is to deadlift between 230 and 240 kg. Coming from a farming background in Fiji and being able to compete for Australia feels surreal and is a pride I will carry with me forever,” Lal shared.

While his professional path started with challenges, including having to meet Australian engineering standards, he found allies in his workmates Don and Dan, who supported his growth. Now employed as a mechanical technician in an ice rink—a profession he admits he never dreamed of back in Fiji—he has managed to build a fulfilling life.

Recently, however, his journey took a poignant turn when his father suffered a serious accident in Fiji. “He’s recovering from his injuries, but it’s hard not having him with me as I prepare for the competition. He is the reason I am here pursuing my dreams, and I will dedicate my performance to him,” Lal expressed.

As he approaches his world debut, Lal emphasizes that his story extends beyond sports—it’s about breaking barriers and illustrating that someone from a humble Indo-Fijian farming background can shine on a global stage. He acknowledges the emotional support from his partner, Keisha, stating, “She has been my rock throughout this entire journey.”

Lal’s story is a powerful reminder that determination can lead to remarkable achievements despite adversity. He aims to inspire young people from the Pacific to pursue their passions and strive for their goals, carrying his father’s name as a testament to their shared resilience.

This inspiring narrative not only highlights Lal’s individual triumphs but resonates with a broader message of hope and determination, encouraging others to overcome their own challenges and succeed.

In summary, Varun Vimlesh Lal’s journey from a small farming community in Fiji to the global powerlifting stage is a testament to perseverance, familial support, and the belief that dreams can be achieved through hard work and determination.
