Fariya Khan recently celebrated a significant achievement as she became the first in her family to earn a degree in journalism, a milestone she attributes to divine guidance and strong family support.
She graduated from the University of the South Pacific in September, marking the realization of a long-held dream. Ms. Khan’s upbringing instilled in her the values of strong moral principles and ethics, which she credits for her success.
“My great-grandfather was the son of an indentured laborer who later became one of Fiji’s bus industry pioneers and a heavyweight boxing champion,” she shared. Currently residing in the city, Ms. Khan also feels a deep connection to her family farm in Sabeto, where she spent much of her childhood.
“I cherish Sabeto because we have a farm in the hills where I grew up, and I would spend nearly every weekend horse riding with my father and uncle. It was an invaluable experience,” she reflected.
Growing up, Ms. Khan learned the importance of confidence, independence, and hard work from her parents, especially her mother, who balanced a full-time job while caring for the family. Her mother encouraged her to prioritize education, reinforcing the idea that it could lead to countless opportunities.
Although she initially aspired to become a lawyer, Ms. Khan ultimately chose to study journalism, literature, and language—a decision she has never regretted. She believes that journalists have the power to effect real change in people’s lives by keeping the public informed on critical socio-economic and political issues.
“Journalism is a vital profession that demands a steadfast commitment to truth and the ability to communicate complex information clearly,” she stated. This path allows journalists to interview influential figures and report on significant events, placing them at the forefront of history.
Throughout her three years of studies, Ms. Khan faced various challenges, but with support and determination, she navigated her university life successfully. Upon graduating, she felt as though she had taken a crucial step in her life, with her family and friends by her side.
“No success is achievable without the mercy of God. By prioritizing faith, I believe any challenge can be overcome. Starting and ending my day with prayer has always been my guiding principle,” she affirmed.
In addition to her recent success and busy schedule, Ms. Khan enjoys pursuing her hobbies in her free time. She loves reading, baking, visiting her family’s farm, and horseback riding. Additionally, she enjoys scrolling through TikTok for creative inspiration.
Ms. Khan offers advice to younger generations, emphasizing that “time and tide wait for no man.” She encourages them to act on their goals and to always put God first, reminding them of the importance of respecting their parents, which is a core value in Islam.
