From Farm to Fame: Fariya Khan’s Journey to Journalism

Fariya Khan recently celebrated a significant achievement as she became the first member of her family to earn a degree in journalism, a goal she reached thanks to her faith and the support of her family. She graduated from the University of the South Pacific in September, marking a long-awaited dream.

Raised with strong moral values and a commitment to ethics, Ms. Khan attributes her success to her upbringing. “My great grandfather was the son of an indentured laborer who became a pioneer in Fiji’s bus industry and a heavyweight boxing champion,” she shared.

Although she resides in the city, Ms. Khan has a deep connection to her family farm in Sabeto. “I cherish Sabeto because we have a farm in the hills where I grew up. Almost every weekend, I’d spend time horse riding with my father and uncle,” she recalled, describing it as “the best experience for me.”

From an early age, Ms. Khan learned the values of confidence, independence, and hard work, particularly from her mother, who balanced a demanding job and family responsibilities. “My mum emphasized the importance of self-reliance and education, which has shaped my bold personality today,” she said.

Initially aspiring to be a lawyer, Ms. Khan’s career trajectory shifted towards journalism, a decision she has never regretted. “I chose journalism, literature, and language because I believe in the impact journalists have on people’s lives. They educate the public on significant issues and help keep communities informed,” she explained.

She recognizes journalism as a powerful profession that demands honesty and clarity, providing opportunities to interact with influential figures and report on critical news events.

While she faced challenges during her studies, Ms. Khan found enjoyment in balancing her academic life. Upon graduating, she felt she had taken a “major step” in her life and credited her parents, sister, peers, and friends for their support, along with her belief in God’s guidance. “Starting and ending my day with prayer has helped me navigate life,” she stated.

In her free time, the young graduate enjoys reading, baking, visiting her farmhouse, and horse riding. She also enjoys using TikTok for entertainment and creativity.

Ms. Khan encourages others to take action on their goals without delay. “If it’s on your to-do list, don’t wait—start now. Always prioritize God and seek His guidance in your challenges,” she advised. “Respect your parents, as it’s a fundamental value in Islam.”
