Fiji-born Varun Vimlesh Lal, an Australian powerlifter, proves that dreams can be lifted alongside heavy weights. Recently, he achieved a remarkable feat by securing third place in the 125kg category at the World Powerlifting Championships held in the United States on November 15, with competitors from Egypt and the USA taking home the gold and silver medals.

Lal, who now resides in Park Ridge, Brisbane, embarked on his journey from the modest farming community of Navau, Ba, where his parents worked tirelessly as sugarcane farmers. His father’s dedication, often spending long hours under the sun to provide for the family, instilled in Lal the values of hard work and perseverance.

Despite growing up in a humble household with two married siblings, Lal always aspired for a better life, which led him to Australia to study Civil Engineering. Upon moving to Australia alone, he faced numerous challenges but found steadfast support from his brother Rajneel and sister-in-law Vennita, who guided him through the transition.

Lal’s venture into powerlifting began a year ago when he joined a team, and in just nine months, he had the opportunity to represent Australia at an international event. He expressed a goal to achieve a deadlift of 230-240 kg, cherishing the honor of representing Australia and reflecting on how his background as part of a small Indo-Fijian farming community can inspire others.

His journey faced an emotional hurdle two weeks ago when his father suffered a serious accident in Fiji. Though his father is recovering, Lal feels the weight of his absence as he prepares for competitions, dedicating his efforts to him. Lal emphasized the significance of his world debut being not just about sports but breaking barriers, showing the potential of someone from a humble background on a global stage.

In addition to his family support, he acknowledged the strength his partner, Keisha, has provided throughout his journey. Lal hopes to demonstrate that determination can lead to success, regardless of the challenges faced. He aims to inspire young individuals in the Pacific to pursue their dreams relentlessly, taking pride in carrying his father’s name and legacy with him.

This inspiring story underscores the importance of resilience, familial support, and the unyielding pursuit of one’s goals. Lal’s achievements serve as a beacon of hope for many, showing that tough beginnings can lead to extraordinary outcomes.
