Every rugby player experiences a pivotal moment that deepens their passion for the sport, and for former Flying Fijians star Sale Sorovaki, it was witnessing Fiji’s legendary victory over the British Lions in 1997. As an eight-year-old boy from Naitasiri, Sorovaki traveled with his family to Suva to watch the match, where he was captivated by rugby icons like Pio Bosco and Qele Ratu.

Sorovaki’s admiration for these players fueled his own ambitions. “Qele Ratu was someone that I really admired when he played for Rewa and Fiji,” he recalls, expressing the inspiration that ignited his rugby career. His talent was evident, allowing him to thrive while playing and studying in New Zealand, ultimately catching the eye of Flying Fijians coach Brad Johnstone in 1994.

After being asked to play for Fiji, Sorovaki made his national debut in 1995 against Canada, a day made even more special by the presence of his family cheering him on. “I scored a try on that Test, so that was icing on the cake for me,” he said, cherishing the memory of donning the national jersey.

In 1998, Sorovaki embraced the responsibility of leading the team as captain, an experience he described as both an honor and a heavy burden. “You sort of feel the weight of your families, friends, team, and your nation on your shoulders,” he noted. His journey led him to his current role as the general manager of Operations and Development for the Fiji Rugby Union, where he continues to foster the sport’s growth and give back to the community that shaped his career.

Sorovaki’s story highlights the importance of passion, hard work, and community in achieving one’s dreams. His experiences resonate with many young athletes in Fiji today, including emerging talents like Mesake Vocevoce, who express a deep gratitude for the opportunity to learn from seasoned players they once idolized. As new generations step onto the rugby field, Sorovaki’s legacy, and the inspirational journeys of others like him, pave the way for a bright future in Fijian rugby, filled with hope and potential for aspiring athletes.
