Ana Yabakivou, an 18-year-old who dropped out of Year 12, has shown remarkable determination by graduating with a Certificate IV in Organic Agriculture from the Ministry of Youth’s Naleba Training Centre in Labasa. Her graduation marked a significant achievement, as she was one of 34 students celebrating this milestone.
Despite facing the setback of failing the Fiji Year 12 Certificate Examination (FY12CE) last year, Ana embraced her second chance at education. Her resilience shone through as she plans to further her studies in agriculture at either the Fiji National University (FNU) Koronivia campus or the University of the South Pacific next year.
Ms. Yabakivou expressed her unwavering commitment to achieving her goals, stating, “I have a simple dream: to get a job and look after my family, meeting their financial needs.” Her graduation day was particularly special as she invited her grandmother, Anasimeci Solokai, to share in the celebration, highlighting the significant role her family plays in her life.
The support from her family, especially her grandmother, has been a fundamental part of her success. Ms. Solokai, 67, was filled with pride and emotion as she witnessed her granddaughter’s achievements, stating that strong family backing can empower students to realize their dreams.
Reflecting on her journey, Ana shared that living in the girls’ dormitory at the training center presented challenges. She found it difficult at first to adjust to being away from her family but ultimately persevered and graduated. She encouraged other students facing difficulties to remain hopeful and not give up, emphasizing that many opportunities await those who strive for success.
Ana’s story is a testament to resilience and the importance of support systems. Her determination exemplifies how challenges can be transformed into stepping stones toward achieving one’s dreams. With her sights set on a brighter future in agriculture, Ana Yabakivou stands as an inspiring figure for young students everywhere, reminding them that dedication can lead to success despite setbacks.
