Ana Yabakivou, an 18-year-old who faced the setback of dropping out in Year 12, has demonstrated remarkable resilience by graduating with a Certificate IV in Organic Agriculture. She celebrated this achievement alongside 33 other graduates from the Ministry of Youth’s Naleba Training Centre in Labasa on Friday.
Despite not passing the Fiji Year 12 Certificate Examination (FY12CE) last year, Ms. Yabakivou embraced the opportunity provided by the Naleba Training Centre to continue her education. With aspirations of furthering her studies at either the Fiji National University (FNU) Koronivia campus or the University of the South Pacific next year, she is determined to build a successful career in agriculture.
Ms. Yabakivou expressed her unwavering confidence in finding a job, emphasizing her desire to support her family financially. She made her graduation day special by inviting her grandmother, Anasimeci Solokai, who expressed overwhelming pride and emotion at her granddaughter’s success. Ms. Solokai, 67, highlighted the importance of family support in achieving one’s goals, saying, “Nothing is impossible if a student has family support and the determination to achieve their goal.”
While the journey to graduation was not without challenges, including living away from her family, Ms. Yabakivou maintained a positive outlook. She urged fellow students who may be feeling discouraged to stay hopeful and persistent, stating, “There are plenty of opportunities to climb up in life.”
This inspiring story highlights the power of determination and support in the pursuit of education and career aspirations. Ana’s journey reminds us all that setbacks do not define us and that with the right mindset and encouragement, anyone can achieve their dreams.
