Ana Yabakivou, an 18-year-old who faced challenges as a Year 12 dropout, has successfully graduated with a Certificate IV in Organic Agriculture. She was among 34 students who celebrated their graduation from the Ministry of Youth’s Naleba Training Centre in Labasa last Friday.
Despite her earlier setback of failing the Fiji Year 12 Certificate Examination (FY12CE) last year, the opportunity to attend the Naleba Training Centre this year helped her rebuild her confidence. Yabakivou has plans to further her studies in agriculture at either the Fiji National University (FNU) Koronivia campus or the University of the South Pacific next year.
Expressing her strong aspirations, she stated, “I have a simple dream: to get a job and look after my family, meeting their financial needs.” The graduation ceremony was made even more special by the presence of her grandmother, Anasimeci Solokai, who expressed immense pride in her granddaughter’s achievement and encouraged the belief that determination and family support can lead to success.
Yabakivou reflected on her journey, mentioning the initial difficulties she faced living in the girls’ dormitory at the training center, where she often felt lonely and missed her family. However, she remained resilient and motivationally advised her peers who might feel discouraged: “Do not give up, because there are plenty of opportunities to climb up in life.”
This story highlights the power of perseverance, family support, and the importance of education in transforming lives. It serves as a reminder that challenges can be overcome, with determination leading the way to success.
Through her journey, Ana Yabakivou not only honors her own dreams but also serves as a beacon of hope for others, showing that with the right support and a strong will, it is possible to achieve one’s goals despite setbacks.
