Ana Yabakivou, an 18-year-old who previously dropped out of Year 12, has successfully graduated with a Certificate IV in Organic Agriculture. Her determination and resilience shone through as she joined 33 other graduates from the Ministry of Youth’s Naleba Training Centre in Labasa.
Despite facing the setback of not passing the Fiji Year 12 Certificate Examination (FY12CE) last year, Ms. Yabakivou found a new opportunity at the Naleba Training Centre, where she was able to rebuild her confidence and skills. With aspirations to further her education, she plans to enroll at either the Fiji National University’s Koronivia campus or the University of the South Pacific to enhance her studies in agriculture.
Reflecting on her journey, Ms. Yabakivou expressed her unwavering resolve to secure employment and provide for her family, stating, “I have a simple dream: to get a job and look after my family, meeting their financial needs.” Her heartfelt graduation ceremony was made even more special by the presence of her grandmother, Anasimeci Solokai, who proudly supported her throughout her studies.
Ms. Solokai shared her emotional pride in her granddaughter’s achievements and emphasized the importance of family support in overcoming obstacles. She passionately stated, “Nothing is impossible if a student has family support and the determination to achieve their goal.”
Though living at the training center’s girls’ dormitory presented its own challenges, including homesickness and a sense of loneliness, Ms. Yabakivou emphasized that perseverance is key. Her advice to other students facing difficulties is to remain hopeful: “My message to students who feel down today is not to give up, because there are plenty of opportunities to climb up in life.”
This story highlights the power of persistence and family support in achieving one’s goals. It serves as a reminder that setbacks can ultimately lead to remarkable comebacks, and with determination and education, young individuals like Ana can forge paths to successful futures.
Overall, Ana’s journey is a testament to the transformative impact of education and the unwavering spirit of those who dare to dream and strive for better opportunities.
