Ana Yabakivou, an inspiring 18-year-old from Nabubu Village in the Namuka District of Macuata, recently overcame adversity by graduating with a Certificate IV in Organic Agriculture from the Naleba Training Centre in Labasa. This achievement culminated in a graduation ceremony attended by 34 students, including Yabakivou, held by the Ministry of Youth.
Despite facing the setback of failing the Fiji Year 12 Certificate Examination (FY12CE) last year, Yabakivou did not let this deter her academic ambitions. Grateful for the opportunity to enroll at the training center this year, she expressed her determination to further her studies at either Fiji National University’s Koronivia campus or the University of the South Pacific next year to enhance her agricultural skills.
Yabakivou holds a heartfelt aspiration of securing a job to support her family financially, stating, “I have a simple dream: to get a job and look after my family.” Her grandmother, Anasimeci Solokai, who attended the graduation ceremony, shared in her pride, expressing tears of joy and faith in her granddaughter’s future success. “Nothing is impossible if a student has family support and the determination to achieve their goal,” Solokai remarked.
Reflecting on her journey, Yabakivou highlighted the challenges of adjusting to dormitory life away from her family. Although she faced moments of loneliness, she persevered, emerging stronger and ready for the next phase of her educational journey. “My message to students who feel down today is not to give up, because there are plenty of opportunities to climb up in life,” she encouraged.
