Ponipate Loganimasi made the bold choice to pursue a career in rugby over attending university, a decision his father, Joeli Kalougata, wholeheartedly supported. Within a short period of less than two years, Loganimasi has made significant strides in the international rugby scene. This year, he not only achieved an Olympic silver medal with the Fijian men’s rugby sevens team but was also the sole Fijian player named to the World Rugby Men’s Sevens Dream Team of the Year announced recently.
Loganimasi’s impressive trajectory continued at the World Rugby Pacific Nations Cup in September, where he made his debut for the Flying Fijians, scoring two tries in their 41-17 victory against Japan. Following his successful performances, he signed with the Fijian Drua in October.
Originating from Lovoni in Ono-i-Lau, and raised in Koroalau, Cakaudrove, Loganimasi’s family initially encouraged him to pursue higher education at Brigham Young University in Utah. However, his father advised him to seek divine guidance in his ambitions and emphasized the importance of hard work, humility, and being receptive to learning. Kalougata expressed immense pride in his son’s accomplishments and optimism for his future in rugby.
In addition to his rugby achievements, Loganimasi is also a gold medallist in the Coca-Cola Games, having won the 200m event during his junior year in high school. His diverse athletic talent also includes experience in indoor basketball.
The other players named in the Dream Team alongside Loganimasi include notables such as Selvyn Davids (South Africa), Antoine Dupont (France), and Aaron Grandidier Nkanang (France), highlighting the high caliber of talent represented.
This story not only showcases the remarkable achievements of one young athlete but also serves as an inspiration for others who follow their dreams, reminding us that with faith, determination, and hard work, significant milestones can be reached. Loganimasi’s journey illustrates the positive outcomes of choosing a path aligned with one’s passions, and his family’s support plays a crucial role in his success. As he continues to excel, he represents hope for aspiring athletes everywhere.
