Josefa Volaisaya Mataitoga, a devoted teacher from the village of Nukuni in Ono-i-Lau, is celebrating 15 years in the teaching profession. At 38 years old, his passion for education has transformed countless lives, showcasing his profound influence as an educator.
Mataitoga’s academic journey began at Vulivuli Primary School and continued through Saqani Junior Secondary School, Labasa College, and Labasa Muslim College. Although he initially aspired to become a nurse to help people, he found his true calling in teaching after enrolling at Lautoka Teachers College. Upon graduation, he was posted to his home island of Ono-i-Lau, where he spent five years as an assistant teacher at the local primary school, reconnecting with his roots.
Following his time in Ono-i-Lau, he spent three years at Nasinu Sangam School, during which he pursued further studies and earned both postgraduate qualifications and a master’s degree in education. Currently, he teaches Class 7 and 8 students at Onolevu District School, where he has served for three years and spent a decade as a head teacher.
Recently, Mataitoga embraced Scouts leadership training, which he describes as a valuable and transformative experience. He encourages the youth to join Scouts, emphasizing the importance of discipline and community involvement in developing essential life skills.
Looking ahead, Mataitoga aspires to become an education officer, a position that would allow him to have an even greater impact on the educational landscape in Fiji. His journey embodies the idea that sometimes, unforeseen changes lead to better opportunities, reinforcing the resilience required in education.
