Riya Ram’s dedication to a career in science was inspired by a dream that guided her path to study in Gujarat, India. After earning her bachelor’s degree in forensic science, the 21-year-old has returned to Fiji, bringing with her aspirations of making a difference in the field.
Raised in the capital city by a resilient single mother, Ms. Ram learned the importance of perseverance and values. She acknowledges that the journey to success is filled with challenges, but believes that passion can help overcome these obstacles. “There will be obstacles, but if you are passionate about what you do, those challenges will only make you stronger,” she stated, encouraging others to embrace opportunities outside their comfort zones.
Her interest in forensic science sparked during her secondary education at Yat Sen Secondary School in Suva. “My decision to pursue forensic science stemmed from my fascination with the intersection of science and justice,” Ms. Ram explained. She was introduced to the concept of criminal justice and recognized the significant role that science plays in solving crimes. This realization motivated her to contribute to the developing field of forensic science in Fiji.
Understanding that forensic science could enhance Fiji’s criminal justice system greatly influenced her career choice. She aims to utilize her education to address real-world problems. Currently, Riya is actively seeking employment in the forensic science field and has been reaching out to various organizations, including government agencies, but has not yet found a position.
Despite the challenges of job searching, she remains enthusiastic about the opportunities for growth and discovery in forensic science. “The ability to solve mysteries, analyze evidence, and contribute to justice is something that excites me,” she expressed. Additionally, she looks forward to learning new techniques and technologies that improve investigative precision, valuing the real impact she can make.
Riya’s ultimate goal is to secure a position in forensic science, contributing to its advancement in Fiji. She hopes to enhance forensic investigations and ensure justice for those in need, leaving a meaningful mark on the criminal justice system in her country.
