From Dreams to Justice: A Young Scientist’s Journey

Riya Ram’s ambition to pursue a career in science originated from a dream. This aspiration led her on a journey to Gujarat, India, where she studied and recently returned to Fiji with a bachelor’s degree in forensic science.

At just 21 years old, Ram was raised in the capital city by her single mother, who instilled in her strong values. She is convinced that success can be achieved despite numerous challenges, provided one is dedicated.

“There will be obstacles, but if you are passionate about what you do, those challenges will only make you stronger,” Ram stated. “Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone—whether it’s studying abroad, pursuing a unique field, or tackling a new opportunity. Believe in yourself and your abilities and remember that persistence and hard work will always pay off.”

Her fascination with forensic science began during her secondary education at Yat Sen Secondary School in Suva. “My decision to pursue forensic science stemmed from my fascination with the intersection of science and justice. During my secondary years, I learned about criminal justice and the essential role science plays in solving crimes. I realized that forensic science could greatly impact Fiji, where the field is still developing, and I was inspired to contribute to its growth.”

Understanding that forensic science could enhance Fiji’s criminal justice system significantly influenced her decision. She wanted a career that would allow her to apply her skills in solving real-world issues.

“This motivation drove me to pursue forensic science with full dedication, as I knew I could help advance this field in my home country,” she noted. Currently, Ram is actively searching for a job in forensic science in Fiji. She has reached out to various organizations, including government bodies, to find an opportunity to utilize her skills but has had no success so far.

Ram is excited about the prospect of growth and discovery within forensic science. “The ability to solve mysteries, analyze evidence, and contribute to justice is something that excites me. I also enjoy the challenge of constantly learning new techniques and technologies that can enhance investigations. Knowing that I can make a tangible difference is incredibly rewarding.”

Her ultimate goal is to secure a position in forensic science and aid in the development of this field in Fiji. “I want to be involved in strengthening forensic investigations, providing justice to those in need, and making a real impact on the criminal justice system here.”
