Riya Ram’s passion for a career in science was inspired by a dream that led her on a journey to Gujarat, India, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in forensic science. The 21-year-old grew up in Fiji’s capital under the guidance of a single mother, who instilled strong values in her.
Ram emphasizes that while the path to success may be filled with challenges, dedication can help overcome them. “There will be obstacles, but if you’re passionate about what you do, those challenges will only make you stronger,” she stated. She encourages others to embrace opportunities outside their comfort zones, whether that involves studying abroad or tackling new fields, insisting that belief in oneself, alongside persistence and hard work, will yield rewards.
Her fascination with forensic science was ignited during her secondary education at Yat Sen Secondary School in Suva. “The decision to pursue forensic science came from my interest in the intersection of science and justice. Learning about criminal justice and the vital role of science in solving crimes showed me how significant forensic science could be in Fiji, where the field is still emerging,” Ram explained.
She is currently seeking job opportunities in forensic science within Fiji. Despite her efforts to connect with various organizations, including government entities, she has yet to secure a position. Nevertheless, Ram remains optimistic about the field’s potential for growth and the role it plays in delivering justice.
“The chance to solve mysteries, analyze evidence, and contribute to justice motivates me. I also relish the continuous learning involved in applying new techniques and technologies to investigations. Knowing that I can make a substantial difference is incredibly fulfilling,” she said.
Ram’s goal is to establish a career in forensic science and aid in the development of this discipline in Fiji. “I aim to enhance forensic investigations, deliver justice to those in need, and make a meaningful impact on the criminal justice system here.”
