Wame Lewaravu, a former lock for the Flying Fijians, grew up amidst legendary rugby figures but never set out with aspirations of turning professional. His dream was simple yet noble: to don the white jersey of Fiji and represent his homeland. Named after Wame Gavidi, the vice-captain of the Flying Fijians during their historic victory over the British Lions in 1977, rugby has always been vital in Lewaravu’s life.

Influenced by his late father and other local rugby icons like Peceli Kina and Rupeni Qaraniqio from the Nadroga region, Lewaravu states, “Rugby is in my DNA.” Prior to going professional, he played local rugby for Nadroga and Naitasiri and represented Fiji at the under-21 level, as well as for the Barbarians and Fiji A teams.

His professional career commenced in 2005 when he was recruited to play in Japan. Lewaravu made his debut for the national team on May 19, 2007, in a test against Manu Samoa, stepping in due to injuries within the squad. The moment he received his first white jersey was particularly emotional for him, stating, “My hands were shaking and emotions flooded in,” a highlight he shared along with memories of his late father.

A few weeks later, Lewaravu had the honor of singing the national anthem at the 2007 Rugby World Cup, an experience that solidified his sense of duty to represent Fiji with pride. Throughout his career, he adhered to the principles of “Toso ena Vakabauta” (move by faith) and humility, maintaining a grounded approach despite the physical and emotional challenges of rugby.

He advises aspiring athletes, “Have faith, work hard, and never forget the people who helped you along the way.” This message resonates with many young Fijian athletes today, reflecting the value of community support, discipline, and determination in their quest for success, mirroring the journeys of other local talents like Aca Ratuva and Rafaele Tuikitai Waqalala, who also strive for excellence in the sport.

Ultimately, Lewaravu’s story not only encapsulates personal ambition but highlights the collective aspirations of Fijian rugby players, inspiring young athletes to chase their dreams with unwavering dedication.
