Riya Ram’s passion for a career in science was inspired by a dream. This dream led her to study in Gujarat, India, where she recently completed her bachelor’s degree in forensic science before returning to Fiji.
At just 21 years old, Ms. Ram was raised in the capital city by a single mother whose strong values shaped her upbringing. She believes that while the path to success can be difficult, dedication is the key to overcoming challenges.
“There will be obstacles, but if you are passionate about what you do, those challenges will only make you stronger,” Ms. Ram expressed. She encouraged others not to fear stepping out of their comfort zones, whether it involves studying abroad, exploring unique fields, or embracing new opportunities. “Believe in yourself and your abilities, and remember that persistence and hard work will always pay off.”
Ms. Ram’s fascination with forensic science began during her time at Yat Sen Secondary School in Suva. “My decision to pursue forensic science stemmed from my fascination with the intersection of science and justice. During school, I learned about criminal justice and the vital role that science plays in solving crimes.”
She recognized that forensic science has the potential to significantly enhance Fiji’s developing criminal justice system, motivating her to contribute to its advancement. Understanding that her skills could help address real issues in her community fueled her dedication to this field.
Currently, Ms. Ram is searching for employment opportunities in forensic science within Fiji. She has reached out to various organizations, including government agencies, but has yet to find a suitable position.
What excites her most is the potential for growth and discovery in forensic science. “The ability to solve mysteries, analyze evidence, and contribute to justice is incredibly rewarding. I also enjoy the challenge of continuously learning new techniques and technologies to make investigations more precise.”
Ms. Ram aims to secure a position in forensic science, aspiring to strengthen forensic investigations and deliver justice to those in need. She hopes to make a tangible impact on Fiji’s criminal justice system.
