Riya Ram’s enthusiasm for pursuing a career in science was inspired by a dream that led her to Gujarat, India, several years ago. Recently, she returned to Fiji after earning a bachelor’s degree in forensic science. At just 21 years old, Riya was raised in the capital city by a single mother who instilled in her strong values.
Riya emphasizes that the journey to success is often fraught with challenges, but she believes that hard work and commitment can overcome these obstacles. “There will be challenges, but if you are passionate about your work, those difficulties will only make you stronger,” she stated. She encourages others not to shy away from stepping outside their comfort zones, whether that means studying overseas, exploring unique fields, or embracing new opportunities. “Believe in yourself and your abilities, and remember that persistence and hard work will always bear fruit.”
Her interest in forensic science was sparked during her secondary education at Yat Sen Secondary School in Suva, where she first encountered the ties between science and justice. She noted, “My choice to pursue forensic science stemmed from my fascination with how science aids in solving crimes.” Riya recognized that forensic science could significantly impact Fiji, a field that is still evolving there. This realization motivated her to contribute to its advancement.
Understanding that forensic science could enhance Fiji’s criminal justice system greatly influenced her career decision. She aspired to use her knowledge and skills to address real-world problems. “This motivation pushed me to commit to forensic science fully, knowing I could help grow this discipline in my home country.”
Currently, Riya is actively looking for job opportunities in the forensic science sector within Fiji. She has been reaching out to various organizations, including government agencies, to find a suitable position where she can apply her expertise but has faced challenges in her search.
What excites Riya the most is the potential for growth and discovery that a career in forensic science offers. “The chance to solve mysteries, analyze evidence, and contribute to justice thrills me. I also appreciate the challenge of learning new techniques and technologies to enhance investigation accuracy. The knowledge that I can make a real difference is incredibly fulfilling.”
Her ultimate goal is to secure a position in forensic science and aid in the development of this field in Fiji. “I aspire to play a role in improving forensic investigations, delivering justice to those who need it, and making a meaningful impact on the criminal justice system here.”
