Josefa Volaisaya Mataitoga, a dedicated teacher from Nukuni in Ono-i-Lau, has made a remarkable impact over his 15 years in the teaching profession. Now 38, Mr. Mataitoga reflects on his inspiring journey that has significantly influenced countless students.
Initially raised in Saqani, Cakaudrove, Mr. Mataitoga began his education at Vulivuli Primary School and continued through Saqani Junior Secondary School, eventually attending Labasa College and Labasa Muslim College. Although he dreamed of becoming a nurse to help others since childhood, he found his true passion in teaching after enrolling at Lautoka Teachers College.
After completing his training, he returned to Ono-i-Lau, where he began his career as an assistant teacher at a local primary school. There, he spent five years reconnecting with his roots. Subsequently, he moved to Nasinu Sangam School for three years, during which he sought to further his education by completing postgraduate studies and later earning a master’s degree in education.
Currently, Mr. Mataitoga teaches Class 7 and 8 at Onolevu District School, marking his third year in this role. Over the last decade, he has focused on being a head teacher, impacting the educational community significantly. Recently, he engaged in Scouts leadership training, which he found transformative and enriching, encouraging younger generations to join and learn valuable discipline and leadership skills.
Looking toward the future, Mr. Mataitoga aspires to become an education officer, aiming to broaden his influence and enhance the educational landscape in Fiji. His journey reflects the belief that sometimes good things fall apart so that better things can come together, underscoring the resilience required in the teaching profession.
