From Dreams to Dedication: A Teacher’s Inspiring Journey

Josefa Volaisaya Mataitoga, a passionate educator from the village of Nukuni in Ono-i-Lau, is celebrating 15 years of impactful service in the teaching profession. At 38 years old, Mr. Mataitoga reflects on his journey, highlighting the significant influence he has had on the countless students he has taught.

After beginning his education at Vulivuli Primary School, he proceeded through Saqani Junior Secondary, Labasa College, and Labasa Muslim College. Although he aspired to be a nurse to help others from a young age, he found his true calling in teaching after enrolling at Lautoka Teachers College. Following his graduation, he returned to his roots in Ono-i-Lau, where he served as an assistant teacher for five years at the local primary school before moving to Nasinu Sangam School for three years. During this time, Mr. Mataitoga took steps to advance his education, completing postgraduate studies and eventually earning a master’s degree in education.

Currently teaching Class 7 and 8 at Onolevu District School, Mr. Mataitoga is now in his third year in this role. His experience extends beyond the classroom, as he recently took part in Scouts leadership training, which has greatly enriched his approach to teaching and community service. He discovered that the skills learned through Scouts significantly contribute to personal discipline and leadership qualities, which he enthusiastically recommends to the younger generation.

Beyond teaching, Mr. Mataitoga is devoted to enhancing the educational landscape within his community and hopes to advance his career by becoming an education officer, which would enable him to have an even greater impact on education in Fiji.

His journey illustrates a broader narrative within the teaching profession, emphasizing the importance of adaptability and lifelong learning. Just as he has navigated his own unexpected transitions, many educators are finding new pathways to leadership and influence in their communities.
