Former Suva Grammar School student Philip Baselala experienced a monumental moment in his rugby career as he made his debut for the Fiji Water Flying Fijians at McDonald Jones Stadium in Newcastle, Australia. The Drua halfback came off the bench during their test match against the Wallabies, stepping in for Simione Kuruvoli.

Excitement filled Baselala as he prepared to make his entrance onto the field. “I was really excited when I ran out – just to go there and do the job and deliver good balls and just stay in the moment after moment,” he shared. Wearing his national jersey alongside well-known players from France, he expressed how this opportunity felt like a dream come true.

His family, including his mother Elenoa Masi Baselala and sister Naomi, traveled from Fiji to support him, reminding him to enjoy the game. Baselala highlighted the encouragement he received from senior team members, a sentiment echoed by his earlier acknowledgments of their supportive environment during his rugby journey. He noted, “It is a very special moment for us being club mates and wearing the national jersey.”

Bringing his experience from playing with the Nabua rugby team, where he, Jiuta Wainiqolo, Sireli Maqala, and Kuruvoli all sharpened their skills, Baselala recognized the intensity of international match-ups compared to the Super Rugby Pacific competition, indicating, “It’s on another level. We have got to be switched on every time.”

Baselala’s story is one of resilience and ambition, symbolizing hope for aspiring athletes in Fiji and beyond. As he continues to grow within the team, fans can look forward to witnessing his contributions in upcoming matches. His journey not only highlights personal achievement but also underscores the importance of teamwork and dedication in the pursuit of sports excellence.
