Josefa Volaisaya Mataitoga, a dedicated educator from the village of Nukuni in Ono-i-Lau, is celebrating 15 years of meaningful service in the teaching profession. At 38 years old, Mr. Mataitoga reflects on his inspiring journey, which has positively impacted countless students throughout his career.

Born in Saqani, Cakaudrove, Mr. Mataitoga began his education at Vulivuli Primary School and continued through various institutions, including Saqani Junior Secondary School, Labasa College, and Labasa Muslim College. Initially aspiring to become a nurse to help others, his career path shifted towards teaching after he enrolled at Lautoka Teachers College. Following his graduation, he returned to his roots in Ono-i-Lau, where he spent five years serving as an assistant teacher at the local primary school.

Subsequently, he moved to Nasinu Sangam School for three years, during which he pursued further education, including postgraduate studies and earning a master’s degree in education. Currently, Mr. Mataitoga teaches Class 7 and 8 students at Onolevu District School, marking his third year in this role. Over his 15-year tenure, he has spent the last decade as a head teacher, underscoring his commitment and leadership in the field.

Recently, Mr. Mataitoga engaged in Scouts leadership training, an enriching experience that has transformed his approach to teaching and community service. Enthusiastic about its benefits, he advocates for young people to join Scouts, emphasizing the importance of discipline and community involvement in developing crucial leadership qualities.

As he looks to the future, Mr. Mataitoga aspires to become an education officer, hoping to make an even greater contribution to the educational landscape in Fiji.
