Lautoka’s Apimeleki Nasalo is experiencing a remarkable turn of events in his rugby career by securing a spot to train with the Fiji Airways men’s 7s extended squad. The young player from Dakuibeqa once believed that his rugby aspirations would only take him to the domestic level. However, he now finds himself on the brink of participating in the prestigious HSBC SVNS circuit as he vies for selection for the remaining seven tournaments.

At just 22 years old, Nasalo reflects on how his dreams have transformed into a tangible reality. He expresses gratitude for the opportunity and acknowledges the hard work ahead. “I didn’t believe I’d be able to reach this far. I thought my rugby career would end at the Skipper Cup competition,” he shared, highlighting his surprise at being considered for national representation.

Driven by a commitment to support his family, especially his mother and two children, Nasalo embraces the rigors of training within the national team environment. He acknowledges the challenges but remains steadfast in his pursuit, inspired by the memory of his late father, whose passing in 2025 continues to motivate him. “Training is really hard here, and I know that if I truly want a spot, I’ll have to endure it because I believe there’s always light at the end of the tunnel,” he added.

The Fiji Airways men’s 7s team is currently performing strongly in the World Series, sharing the top position with South Africa and New Zealand. As they gear up for the Singapore 7s tournament starting on the 31st of this month, Nasalo’s journey serves as an inspiring narrative of perseverance and ambition in the sport. His story resonates with many who face their own challenges, providing hope that determination and hard work can lead to success.
