Walking into Matata Kitchen in Labasa Town, one is warmly greeted by the 34-year-old Rizwan Sheik Madar, whose friendly demeanor masks a story of resilience and determination. Raised by hardworking parents—his father sold produce at the market and his mother managed home duties—Rizwan’s upbringing was marked by financial struggle.
From a young age, he assisted his parents before school each morning, fully aware that his family’s financial situation would eventually limit his educational prospects. After completing Form 6, he realized his parents could not afford further schooling and decided to contribute to the household instead.
At just a teenager, Rizwan began his journey at Matata Kitchen, accepting his first job without hesitation. Starting at the bottom, he washed dishes, scrubbed pots, and took on various small tasks, all while lacking any formal cooking experience. However, an eagerness to learn led him to be mentored by the restaurant’s cook, who imparted valuable culinary skills.
Over the years, he mastered the preparation of traditional Fijian dishes like fish lolo and rourou, winning the trust of the restaurant owners along the way. “I think I’ve been working for Matata for about 15 or 16 years now,” he shared, reflecting on his journey. Today, he manages the establishment with minimal oversight, having developed a strong, almost fraternal bond with the owner.
Rizwan’s hard work has not only transformed his own life but also allowed him to support his family. “I look after my family. I have done everything for them,” he remarked, emphasizing his commitment. Each moment spent in the kitchen is fueled by his desire to create a better life for his loved ones.
His tale serves as an inspiring reminder to others facing adversity. “Be patient. Keep moving forward, and don’t lose hope,” he advised, highlighting his own path from limited education to a fulfilling career. Rizwan’s message resonates with the community of Labasa, encouraging resilience and perseverance, even in challenging circumstances.
