Fulori Diraboki, a student at Dravo District School, never anticipated that her dedication to caring for her ill mother would earn her recognition as a source of inspiration. Her remarkable journey first came to light on November 30, when she was celebrated as dux at her school in Tailevu.
Recently, Fulori received further accolades at the Fiji Children’s Award ceremony, where she was honored for her outstanding progress in personal development. This recognition was presented by Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection, Lynda Tabuya, alongside assistant Sashi Kiran, and she was one of 15 recipients acknowledged for overcoming adversity to achieve success.
A 13-year-old with a commendable spirit, Fulori expressed her gratitude, stating, “Receiving the recognition was unbelievable because all I know is that I was just performing my responsibilities as a young daughter to my mom.” She attributed her strength to her faith, emphasizing that God has been her guide through challenging times.
Fulori’s story is one of exceptional resilience. Hailing from Wainika, Tawake in Cakaudrove, she attended Naduna Arya Pathshala School from Year One to Year Seven. Her life took a dramatic turn this year when her mother’s health deteriorated after a serious spinal condition left her bedridden for four years. Fulori stepped up to care for her mother when her older siblings, who were supposed to take on this responsibility, remained in Labasa due to administrative hurdles regarding their studies.
Her daily routine involves bathing her mother, cleaning, cooking, and preparing for school, yet Fulori does not let these responsibilities hinder her academic ambitions. With a fervent desire to excel, she utilizes every opportunity to enhance her education, attending evening and holiday classes, and collaborating with her classmates to tackle challenging subjects like mathematics.
Fulori’s determination and the strong bond with her mother have not only shaped her into a prominent student but also serve as an example of strength and selflessness that can inspire others. Her story is a beautiful reminder of the power of love and resilience in overcoming life’s challenges, highlighting the incredible potential in all of us to rise above adversity.
