Lote’s Homestay, located in Namulomulo, Nabouwalu, Bua, has successfully established itself as a popular destination, drawing in hundreds of visitors during the festive season. Owner Alipate Radrodro, who previously worked in the hotel industry, reported that his homestay hosted over 100 guests in December alone. Among the visitors were employees from various government agencies and NGOs, highlighting the business’s growing appeal.
Established in the aftermath of Tropical Cyclone Yasa in 2020, Lote’s Homestay first served a group from Save the Children Fiji who conducted post-cyclone assessments. Radrodro notes, “Save the Children Fiji stayed with us for three months,” marking a significant beginning for the venture. Drawing from his experience as a Business Development Manager at Holiday Inn Suva, he envisioned the homestay as a pathway to financial stability and entrepreneurship.
The homestay has been converted from a family home into a welcoming space that accommodates 17 guests across three houses, charging $100 per person per night, which includes breakfast and dinner. Radrodro expressed gratitude towards his family, especially his wife, stating that they have been his source of strength throughout this journey.
Customer satisfaction has played a significant role in the business’s success. As the only accommodation provider in Nabouwalu, their location near the Nabouwalu Jetty has made it a convenient option for ferry passengers who occasionally need a place to stay during delays.
In 2023, Radrodro expanded his business by launching a vehicle rental service, which now operates 13 vehicles, including a minibus that services the Nabouwalu-Labasa route. He credited the success of his homestay for the opportunity to diversify his offerings.
Looking ahead, Radrodro has plans for substantial expansion at Lote’s Homestay. He is working on a project estimated to cost nearly $1 million, aimed at adding a swimming pool, bar, and restaurant to enhance guest experience. Additionally, he has secured beachfront land from local landowners to build more accommodation options, offering guests the choice between a homestay or a boutique beachfront hotel experience.
Radrodro’s determination and vision for growth reflect a positive outlook not only for his business but for the local community in Nabouwalu, as these developments are expected to create around 15 new jobs. His story is an inspiring example of resilience and innovation in the face of challenges.
This article highlights the potential for local businesses to thrive through strategic planning and community support, emphasizing a hopeful future for both Radrodro and the Nabouwalu area.
