A local entrepreneur has recently acknowledged the potential for growth that can stem from handcrafting, emphasizing the importance of adapting to new challenges in business. Iowana Salusalu runs her handmade jewelry business, known as Wananavu Earrings, from her home in Qelekuro, Tailevu, alongside her six children.

As one approaches Natovi along the coastal road, the area where Salusalu operates comes into view, showcasing her entrepreneurial venture. She has been creating jewelry for the past 20 years, working with several hotels, including the Shangri-La, before deciding to start her own business.

Salusalu began her business journey in 2019, focusing on handmade products that reflect local creativity. She highlighted that her jewelry is made using natural materials from Vatulele and is unique in design, including earrings, necklaces, and other items.

Currently, she collaborates with her daughter in the business, witnessing significant progress as they work together on various projects aimed at uplifting their family’s prospects. Many locals often stop by her shop to admire the beauty and quality of her products.

“I believe if we can achieve an income of $2 a day, it significantly contributes to our growth, allowing us to potentially earn more within a week,” she shared.

Salusalu has gained a substantial clientele, including a foreign woman who has shown interest in her products and is currently residing in the United States. Meanwhile, women in some villages in Tailevu are eager to learn business skills to better manage their small enterprises.

Her handmade jewelry ranges from $2 to $55 for sets and individual pieces, with daily earnings reaching between $200 and $400. Salusalu’s success has not only provided support to her family but has also encouraged her children to pursue education and empowerment through entrepreneurship.

She emphasizes the importance of perseverance in business, encouraging locals to strive towards progress and not to retreat into past challenges. By focusing on self-sustainability, she believes they can leverage their skills to create viable sources of income daily.
