Sevuloni Naucukidi, the acting commissioner of the Fiji Corrections Service, spoke out after enduring a wave of criticism following his recent appointment. In an exclusive interview, he addressed various allegations and controversial moments from his past, particularly a viral nightclub incident, that led to scrutiny over his qualifications and suitability for the role.
Naucukidi explained that he was on bereavement leave when he received a call from the Solicitor-General, Ropate Green, to discuss his potential appointment. He emphasized that he had no prior knowledge of the appointment and labeled speculation surrounding nepotism—primarily due to his connection with acting Attorney-General Siromi Turaga—as unfounded. He clarified that both are from the Lomaiviti Province, but their relationship is strictly professional.
Reflecting on the backlash from a personal altercation captured in a viral video, Naucukidi stated that he regretted aspects of the incident but insisted that the video was edited to misrepresent him. He detailed that he had been attacked unexpectedly and that it was a completely unprovoked situation involving an intoxicated individual.
In discussing his qualifications, Naucukidi highlighted his extensive experience within the corrections system, climbing the ranks from accounts officer to his newly appointed position through various leadership roles. This background, he asserted, equips him with the expertise needed to lead effectively.
Since stepping into the acting role, he has noted significant challenges, including a decline in staff morale and ineffective communication within the service, exacerbated by years of mismanagement. To combat these issues, he initiated reforms such as empowering officers and introducing training aimed at enhancing operational cohesion.
Naucukidi expressed pride in recent achievements, including the approval of a budget increase from $57.8 million to $62.5 million, which he views as crucial to bolstering the service’s operations and addressing pressing needs within the correctional facilities.
Looking ahead, Naucukidi’s focus remains on revitalizing the Fiji Corrections Service amid ongoing scrutiny and challenges. His commitment to transforming the corrections system aims not only to restore public trust but also to engage various stakeholders in improving rehabilitation practices.
This proactive approach signals a hopeful future for the Fiji Corrections Service, as Naucukidi works to foster a collaborative environment conducive to meaningful reform and rehabilitation for both staff and inmates alike.
