The Gold Coast Senibiau rugby team has shown remarkable resourcefulness and determination as they prepared for the Vatulele 7s tournament, which began yesterday at the Vatulele District School grounds. Facing financial challenges due to a lack of sponsorship, the team turned to innovative methods to fund their journey, such as harvesting coconuts and building pig pens.

Esala Masinisau, a player on the team, shared their story during an interview, emphasizing the hardships they encountered while trying to make their way to the tournament. “We faced a lot of challenges, such as the lack of a sponsor. In coming here, we were able to do so by climbing for coconuts and constructing pig pens,” Masinisau explained, highlighting their dedication and hard work.

Traveling from Korotogo Village, the team caught transport to Korolevu landing before heading to Vatulele by fiberglass boat, which cost them $40 each. As they participate in the two-day tournament, the team is eager to secure a victory that would not only bolster their morale but also pave the way for future competitions. Masinisau expressed the hope that winning at Vatulele could serve as a turning point for the team’s aspirations in sevens rugby.

As the tournament continues, the Senibiau team remains grateful to their families and supporters for their encouragement, while they strive to make their efforts worthwhile.

This inspiring story reflects the spirit of perseverance and teamwork, demonstrating how passion for sport can drive individuals to overcome financial barriers. The team’s commitment to their goals and their resourceful approach to funding their trip showcases the dedication that is often found in grassroots sports, creating a hopeful narrative for aspiring athletes in similar situations.
