The Gold Coast Senibiau rugby team has successfully financed their preparations and journey to Vatulele for the Mick’s Fiji Tours & Transfers Vatulele 7s, which commenced yesterday at the Vatulele District School grounds. Faced with challenges like a lack of sponsorship, the team, hailing from Korotogo Village in Nadroga province, engaged in creative fundraising efforts.

In an interview, player Esala Masinisau shared that the team managed to support their trip by climbing for coconuts and constructing pig pens. This entrepreneurial spirit enabled them to make the journey despite financial hurdles. The team traveled to Vatulele by first reaching Korolevu landing and then taking a fiberglass boat to the island, costing $40 per person.

As they participate in this two-day tournament, Masinisau articulated the team’s hopes of returning victorious, which would serve as a motivation for future competitions. He expressed gratitude towards their families and supporters for their encouragement as they vie for success today.

This story not only highlights the determination and resourcefulness of the Senibiau team but also showcases the spirit of community and support that uplifts local athletes. Their journey reflects how grassroots efforts can overcome challenges and contribute to a larger dream in sports.

Summary: The Gold Coast Senibiau team overcame financial challenges through coconut selling and pig pen construction to participate in the Vatulele 7s tournament, expressing hope for victory and gratitude towards their supporters.
