Josefa Volaisaya Mataitoga, a devoted educator from the village of Nukuni in Ono-i-Lau, is celebrating an impressive 15-year career in teaching. At 38 years old, Mr. Mataitoga reflects on his journey, which has had a significant and positive impact on the lives of countless students.
Originally from Saqani, Cakaudrove, Mr. Mataitoga’s educational path began at Vulivuli Primary School, followed by studies at Saqani Junior Secondary School, Labasa College, and Labasa Muslim College. Despite his childhood dream of becoming a nurse in order to help others, he found his calling in education after enrolling at Lautoka Teachers College. Upon completing his training, he returned to his home island, where he spent five years as an assistant teacher at the local primary school, where he reconnected with his roots.
Following his tenure in Ono-i-Lau, Mr. Mataitoga took a position at Nasinu Sangam School for three years. During this period, he dedicated himself to furthering his education—culminating in a master’s degree in education—while positively influencing students. Currently, he teaches Class 7 and 8 at Onolevu District School, where he has spent the last three years, including a decade as a head teacher.
Recently, Mr. Mataitoga participated in Scouts leadership training, which he found to be both enriching and transformative. His experience inspired him to advocate for young people to join Scouts, as he emphasizes the importance of discipline and community involvement in fostering essential leadership skills.
Looking ahead, Mr. Mataitoga aspires to become an education officer, aiming to broaden his contributions to the educational landscape in Fiji.
