Fiji has produced its own musical talent, one of whom is 34-year-old Loata Raibevu from Kalabu Village. With connections to Vanuabalavu, Raibevu’s musical journey also started in the church. She participated in the Raibevu Memorial Methodist Church Sunday school choir and later transitioned to the main choir as she reached her teenage years. After a brief hiatus from church, she rediscovered her passion for singing.
Coming from a family that cherishes music but did not pursue it professionally, Raibevu found the confidence to carve her own path in the music industry. “I come from a musical family,” she explains, noting that while her relatives were talented singers, they never ventured beyond the church settings. Raibevu is the first in her family to turn her love for music into a profession.
Her mother, who sang only in church, provided Raibevu with the motivation and strength needed to grow as a musician. Acknowledging her family’s support, she recounts spending time singing with her uncles and aunts, who also performed in the church choir. Their familial bond and artistic encouragement fostered her growth.
Raibevu’s career took flight as she joined the band Lost Tribe Fiji, where she served as the lead singer for four years under the management of Jojo Whippy. Her experiences have included performing at the Hibiscus Festival and participating in local talent searches, all contributing to her confidence and performance skills. Raibevu credits Mr. Whippy with teaching her vital skills like tone control and stage presence.
The camaraderie within the band became more than just a musical experience for her; it evolved into a family-like atmosphere that provided emotional support and guidance through both her professional and personal life. Although the band has since disbanded, she continues to pursue her musical journey, now focusing on writing original songs and honing her craft.
Raibevu encourages others interested in music to follow their passion, stating, “If you want to pursue music, go for it. Let nothing stop you, pursue it and make it yours.” Her story serves as a testament to the power of passion and perseverance, inspiring others to embark on their own musical journeys, regardless of their backgrounds.
