Tomasi Radakua, a 39-year-old musician from Nukuloa, Gau in Fiji, is carving a niche for himself in the country’s music scene, a journey rooted in faith and community. Growing up in Vatuwaqa, Suva, in a family deeply involved in the Methodist Church, Radakua’s early love for music was nurtured through his participation in the church choir from a young age, inspired by his parents’ musical devotion.
His educational path led him to schools in Suva and Tailevu, where he developed a profound admiration for Isireli Gumatua, a musician whose work influenced him significantly. After completing high school, Radakua worked at Flour Mills of Fiji, now FMF Foods Ltd., but faced challenges related to mental health, prompting his admission to St Giles Hospital in 2014.
Upon his discharge, he dedicated himself to caring for his aging parents and became a caretaker for their church. It was during this challenging chapter of his life that he discovered the healing power of music. Writing songs became not just a way to express himself but also a therapeutic outlet for his experiences. He believes the lyrics that flow through him are inspired by divine guidance.
In 2023, he began working with the Psychiatric Survivors Association, where he serves as an advocacy officer, gaining insight into the struggles faced by individuals with mental health challenges. This experience has further fueled his passion for creating music that resonates with those facing similar obstacles.
Radakua’s recent song, “Nothing about us, without us,” written for the International Day of People with Disabilities, reflects his commitment to advocacy through music. He encourages others to recognize their talents, stating, “We are capable of doing anything. We can change the world.”
This inspiring journey highlights how music can serve as a powerful tool for healing, expression, and advocacy, urging individuals to rise above challenges and share their gifts with the world.
In summary, Tomasi Radakua’s story is not just about music; it’s a testament to resilience, faith, and the healing power of creative expression. His journey offers hope and inspiration to those facing obstacles, reminding us all of the potential each individual holds to make a difference.
