Josaia McNamara, a 50-year-old artist from the iTaukei community of Matuku, Lau, has made significant strides in the art world, influenced by his rich cultural upbringing in Tamavua. Raised by his maternal grandparents and his hardworking mother, who was actively engaged in farming and handicrafts, McNamara’s early life revolved around creativity and resilience.
From the tender age of seven, McNamara began exploring his artistic inclinations, using charcoal and pencil to express himself on various surfaces. Although his journey toward becoming a professional artist was not straightforward, it intensified during his time at the University of the South Pacific, where he participated in workshops with international artists.
He discovered the Fiji Arts Council, which became a pivotal institution for him, offering vital networking opportunities and a platform to showcase his artwork. Although the National Fine Arts Exhibition at the council was not as prominent in the early stages of his career, it provided a crucial foundation for his artistic development.
For McNamara, art transcends mere profession; it is a spiritual exploration that encourages individuals to delve deeper into their identities and life experiences.
