Ruci Kali Rokotuiwakaya, a passionate final-year laboratory student, has always aspired to build a career in the medical field from a young age. At just 22 years old, she hails from Nakaile Village, Tokatoka in Tailevu, with familial ties to Naivuruvuru in Verata.
Her journey hasn’t been without its challenges. Growing up as one of eight siblings while her father, a biology teacher, was the sole breadwinner, Ruci faced significant obstacles. “My parents always encouraged my education, ensuring I did my best,” she recalled. The family frequently moved due to her father’s job, which presented a tough transition each time she had to adapt to new school environments.
Ruci completed her studies at Mahatma Gandhi Memorial High School and then pursued a one-year certificate program in clinical laboratory technology in 2021, followed by a bachelor’s degree in medical laboratory science (BMLS). This educational foundation equipped her with vital knowledge of clinical procedures, diagnostic tools, and laboratory techniques. She has gained valuable skills in areas such as biochemistry, microbiology, hematology, and clinical diagnostics during her four-year BMLS program.
“I have learned that time management and resilience are essential in navigating the rigorous demands of tertiary education,” she explained. Ruci emphasized the importance of maintaining a positive outlook, learning from setbacks, and valuing feedback to grow stronger in difficult situations.
For Ruci, the most fulfilling aspect of her studies is the opportunity to help address real-world medical issues. With aspirations to specialize in areas like molecular or forensic pathology, she aims to contribute to advanced research that could increase our understanding of diseases.
Her advice to the next generation of aspiring scientists is to “stay curious and never stop learning.” She highlighted the ever-evolving nature of medical laboratory science, urging others to embrace a mindset of lifelong learning to thrive in their careers.
Ruci’s journey serves as a reminder of the power of determination and support in overcoming challenges on the path to fulfilling one’s dreams. Her resilience and eagerness to learn position her well for a bright future in the medical field, and she looks forward to what the coming years will bring.
This inspiring story reflects the broader trends seen in recent graduates from programs in Fiji, such as Crystal Nivedita Shobha, who also faced challenges while pursuing a degree in science but remained undeterred by the difficulties of the job market. Ruci’s achievements underline the potential for success in the medical field despite adversities, reinforcing the hope that with dedication, perseverance, and support, young individuals can indeed shape their futures.
