Ifereimi Waqacama Vesikula, a proud father from Namara, Tailevu, celebrated a milestone in his daughter’s educational journey as she graduated from Fiji National University (FNU) with two certificates in Sports Science – Level 4 and Level 5. Mr. Vesikula, who works with the National Fire Authority, was among the attendees at the graduation ceremony held at the Vodafone Arena in Suva.

His daughter, Mere Drewai Vesikula, 21, stood out as one of only three students to earn a Level 5 certificate and the only one to attain Level 4. Mr. Vesikula recalled the family’s support of Mere’s passion for sports from an early age, recalling her unique position as the only girl on the Tailevu South Under-9 boys’ rugby team during the Milo Kaji games. Despite some apprehension that she might shift her focus after high school at Adi Cakobau School, she remained dedicated to her pursuit of Sports Science.

Mere acknowledged the challenges she faced, including daily commutes from Tailevu to her classes at the Nasinu Campus and financial difficulties. However, she emphasized her gratitude for her family’s unwavering support that kept her motivated throughout her studies. Currently, she is completing an internship at a gym in Nasinu and aspires to become a teacher of Physical Education, Music, and Arts and Craft.

Reflecting on the journey, Mr. Vesikula highlighted the crucial role parents play in nurturing their children’s aspirations, even amidst life’s challenges, underscoring the importance of prioritizing children’s dreams.

This touching story serves as an inspiring reminder of the power of family support and determination in overcoming obstacles to pursue one’s dreams. The dedication shown by Mere is not just an accomplishment for herself but a beacon of hope for other young athletes and students facing similar challenges.
