In the Solove Sector of Fiji, a remarkable story has emerged that showcases the impact of determination and innovation in the sugarcane farming community. Sanjay Murti, a 47-year-old father of two and the founder of Isharat Farm Services, has significantly changed his life and the lives of many cane farmers by becoming a tractor service provider to meet an essential need in the industry.
After leaving school after Form 4, Mr. Murti began his career as a cane harvester before advancing to the role of manager at Food Process (Batiri Citrus Farm). His journey took a pivotal turn when he identified a considerable opportunity in Fiji’s sugarcane sector, spurred by a new initiative introduced by the Fiji Sugar Corporation.
In 2022, with support from the Fiji Sugar Corporation Limited and the Ministry of Agriculture, Mr. Murti made the bold decision to enter the transport service sector. He noticed a shortage of tractors, which was hampering the ability of farmers to prepare their land effectively.
“I saw a shortage of tractors in the sector, which made it difficult for farmers to prepare their land,” Mr. Murti stated. He explained that many farmers struggled to pay upfront for services. However, with the Fiji Sugar Corporation’s business plan concept and work order system, he was able to offer services without requiring immediate cash payments. “It was a win-win for everyone,” he added.
Beginning with just one tractor, Mr. Murti utilized his experience from Food Process to help local farmers with land preparation. His commitment to providing dependable services quickly gained recognition among farmers in the area.
Today, his business has expanded impressively, now operating a fleet of six tractors and a variety of essential equipment such as disc ploughs, tillers, slashers, and boom sprayers—tools crucial for sugarcane cultivation.
“With perseverance and support from FSC field officials and the team, I was able to grow the business,” he remarked. He highlighted that the work order system enabled him to manage the business effectively, benefiting both himself and the farmers.
In addition to his services, Mr. Murti has resumed cane farming, having cultivated 7.5 acres of cane this year, with plans for further growth.
